Muslims Celebrate Kurban Bayram
Eid al-Adha, also called Feast of the Sacrifice, the Major
Festival, Greater Eid, Kurban Bayram or Eid e Qurban is an important religious
holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. Muslims worldwide celebrate the
willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his young first-born
son Ismail (Ishmael) as an act of submission to Allah’s command and his son’s
acceptance to being sacrificed, before Allah intervened to provide Abraham with
a lamb to sacrifice instead. For Muslims, this celebration is all about charity
and community. During this holiday people are constantly on the move visiting
family and friends. Family ties get strengthened and children are given an
opportunity to bond with the older generations. According to Islamic rules,
every Muslim who is wealthy enough must sacrifice a farm animal for God. The
meat from the animal is then shared – one third saved for the household, one
third shared between friends and neighbors and the final third given to the
poor.
