Medical radioactive material truck 'stolen in Mexico'
Mexican authorities have issued an alert for a stolen truck
carrying dangerous radioactive material from a disused medical device,
authorities said Wednesday. The country's nuclear safety watchdog, known as the
CNSNS, said that the white Volkswagen truck was stolen Monday at a gas station
in Hidalgo state and that the radioactive material posed no risk so long as its
container was not broken or tampered with. The truck was on its way to a
nuclear waste storage facility when it was stolen, the agency said on its web
site. The truck was transporting a cobalt-60 teletherapy source from a hospital
in the northern city of Tijuana to a radioactive waste storage centre, the
International Atomic Energy Agency said.
