Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary
In Ukraine, 14 October, Orthodox and
Greek-Catholics celebrate feast of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary . According to legend, on this day the army of
ancient Rus led by Askold laid siege to Constantinople (the center of
Orthodoxy). Residents of the
capital of the Byzantine Empire in the prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary to
ask for salvation. And the Mother
of God, according to legend, was the sight of men, and hid them with his cloak. After that enemies could not see these
people.
According to some sources, the affected Askold and his retainers
received holy baptism and became Christians.
According to another version, the inspiration for the vision of
the evening was Andrew Fool during the siege of Constantinople troops
Hagarites. Holy Mother of God
appeared to the city in the temple and took them under his protection cover. After that, the enemy troops
retreated, and the city was saved.
Since 1999, the feast of the Protection in Ukraine is celebrated
as the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks . In 1942, this day was officially
formed Ukrainian Insurgent Army, because traditionally it is also the day of the UPA . In Ukraine, the feast of the
Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary was one of the most important holidays of
Cossacks, who built many temples of God and especially revered icon of the
Intercession.
Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been installed in the IX
century. The Byzantine Empire during

In ancient times, the people in this day began and ended with the
wedding season agricultural period. There
was a custom to complete all the field work until October 14.
In the morning at the church in a hurry widows, single women and
girls who did not have to get married. They
prayed to be under the protection of the Virgin. There was a saying: "The Holy
Pokrіvonko, cover my golіvonku, hustkoyu Hoch, Hoch ganchіrkoyu abi not bula
dіvkoyu."
